Financing malaria elimination
A new report released this week by the UCSF Global Health Group’s Malaria Elimination Initiative (MEI) and Cambridge Economic Policy Associates evaluates the available sources of financing for malaria-eliminating countries and provides recommendations of new or innovative financing mechanisms for elimination. The report, entitled Financing for Malaria Elimination, found that although the Global Fund is the largest financier of elimination, most financing for elimination comes from the governments of the eliminating countries themselves; other bi- and multi-lateral donors tend to focus more on malaria control in higher endemic settings. Regional funds for elimination are recommended as an effective way to leverage financing, and the report sets the stage for a broader investment case for malaria elimination to maintain and/or strengthen sources of financing from current and emerging donors.
