Malaria elimination background paper series is released

The UCSF Global Health Group's Malaria Elimination Initiative (MEI) is pleased to share with you a series of background papers designed to make evidence-based recommendations on the roles of program management, surveillance, importation management and mass drug administration in countries targeting malaria elimination. Originally prepared to inform the newly approved Malaria strategy at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the papers provide a rich source of synthesized, recent evidence on topics of broader interest, and are being disseminated for broader use. Each paper has an accompanying 2-page brief that synthesizes the main lessons from the series.

The background papers were developed and informed by an international team of authors, reviewers and key informants that includes national and international malaria leaders and implementers, academicians from a range of disciplines and universities, and several members of UCSF Global Health Group's Malaria Elimination Initiative.

The series includes the following papers:

• Program Management Issues in Implementation of Elimination Strategies examines the major enabling factors and roadblocks in the management of malaria elimination activities. It discusses how to effectively manage the shift from malaria control to elimination at the national level, borrowing from management techniques used in the private sector.
