Ernest Kenu

Ernest Kenu, PhD, MBchB, MPH, GCPS, BSc, is a medical practitioner and a Professor of Epidemiology at the Department of Epidemiology and Disease Control, School of Public Health, University of Ghana. He completed a fellowship in Cancer Epidemiology at the National Cancer Institute, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. He also serves as the convenor for the establishment of the Specialized Presbyterian Cancer Center in Ghana.

Since 2011, he has worked as a regional trainer for MEASURE Evaluation, providing training in monitoring and evaluation across the Africa region. He brings extensive technical and programmatic expertise to the implementation of Global Fund-supported HIV, TB, and Malaria programmes in Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

He is the Program Director of the Ghana Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (GFELTP), which implements frontline, intermediate, and advanced field epidemiology training in Ghana. The program also serves as a regional training hub for advanced field epidemiology residents from Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Dr. Kenu is the Director of the Ghana office of the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET). He is the immediate past Board Chair of AFENET and has served on the advisory boards of STOP TB Partnership Ghana and TEPHINET.

He has served as an external examiner and moderator for several academic institutions, including Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana), the University of Namibia, the University of Pretoria, and the University of Johannesburg (South Africa).

Deeply involved in epidemiological research, he has served as principal investigator on numerous grants funded by organizations such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), and Africa CDC. He has authored or co-authored over 160 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

In 2023, he received a Presidential Citation in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the national and social development of the Republic of Korea through international development cooperation.
