Malaria elimination likely to benefit from Obama Administration’s enhanced budget request for PMI
The Obama Administration strengthened its commitment to malaria, with a budget request for an additional $200 million for the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). This additional amount brings the total requested for PMI in the next fiscal year to $874 million– a 30 percent increase since the last appropriation and a more than doubling of PMI’s budget since the beginning of the Obama Administration. If appropriated, these requested funds will be used to support three new countries (Sierra Leone, Cote D’Ivoire, and Cameroon), expand the existing program in Burkina Faso, support malaria elimination efforts in Zambia and Cambodia, distribute nearly 14 million bed nets in sub-Saharan Africa, and invest in research and development for new tools to combat malaria.
